Getting home-based cooks on one platform.
LEZIMA GOMES DOHA There is little exposure for home-based food businesses in Qatar besides the MIA-Park Bazaar, which operates only during winter, and Facebook pages Doha Foodies and Qatar Home Cooks. In an attempt to create a proper platform for talented people running home-based food businesses, Tammy Schiel opened the doors of her house by creating a group called Entrepreneur Food & Bake Sale. The first sale, a women-only event, was held recently and saw the participation of 10 different entrepreneurs. Schiel, who herself runs a home-based business called Nutty Delights & Then Some, selling nut butters and granolas, said,"I thought it would be a great initiative to do the food and bake sale along with a few non-food women entrepreneur, and present these wonderful women to the community." The event saw the participation of women such as Aryam, from Venezuela, who has been a professional cook for the last 20 years. Popularly known as The Pie Lady, she was seen selling savoury and sweet pies. Sara from Spain was selling her delicious chocolate delights with Swiss chocolate, dates, nuts and other fresh and nutritious ingredients and Suzy Food for Life brought along free vegan samples of cheesecake and vegan sushi. Coffee lovers saw Nature's Treasure hosting a free coffee giveaway with the finest, freshly ground Ethiopian coffee beans, along with Sidr honey and raw organic coconut oil. The event also saw a non-food entrepreneur Nina coming from Mexico who was seen displaying her stunning Colibri Mexican Silver for sale. The event also had a mother-daughter duo selling not only home-made goodies, but also their unique hand-made baby gifts. For those who were looking for a little lunch day out, the event saw Mumbai Street restaurant serving up a vareity of exquisite Indian chaat, kebabs, kulfi and tandoori food. Schiel said,"There were actually so many who wished to participate and present their products, but due to space constraints the event could not host everyone. For the next round, I am planning to accommodate more sellers in a larger space."
