Ralph's (1080-1120) is the least known and studied of the half-dozen or so Latin accounts of the First Crusade written by participants or those with substantial access to participants, mostly because of the difficulties of its Latin. He joined Bohemond of Taranto's army as a military chaplain, and after arriving in the East, took service with Bohemond's nephew Tancred, who ruled the principality of Antioch from 1108 to 1112. Historians Bernard (U. of Minnesota) and David (U. of New Hampshire) offer a very readable English translation and an introduction to Ralph's life, his goals and methods as a historian in general and a Norman historian in particular, his subject matter, and his value as an independent source.
