The company said that the majority of the new refinery's supply of crude glycerine will come from Cargill's biodiesel plant.

Cargill added that it based its decision to build a glycerine refinery due to the increase in demand for the product noticed in recent years.

"We can produce high value glycerine to individual customers' specifications," explained Jack van den Hoek, who is head of Cargill's biodiesel operations in Europe.

"Our facilities in Frankfurt are very well located to serve the bulk of European refined glycerine demand. This refinery benefits from the scale of our biodiesel operations and meets today's stringent food safety standards", he added.

The opening of the new refinery has created 7 new positions at the Frankfurt site, including the appointment of Christian Meyer as Cargill's European commercial manager for glycerine.

Glycerine is a typical oleochemical high added value product (the European market size being more than 400.000 tons/year) and is widely used in its refined form in cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical applications.

In foods and beverages glycerine is used as a humectant, solvent and sweetener, and may help preserve foods. It is also used as filler in commercially prepared low-fat foods.
