German FM says 5,000 civilians die in Syria, urges Russia, China to join condemnations.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Monday said 5,000 civilians were killed in Syria since the unrest started in mid-March, and urged Russia and China to join the international consensus in condemning the Syrian regime."I think it is necessary that those countries in the Security Council which are still hesitating (to) change their mind ... We have to give a clear answer to these repressions and atrocities in Syria. I am really shocked about what I heard about the atrocities in Syria. Five thousand people were killed, civilians, people who asked for freedom and for their civil and human rights," he told reporters following a meeting with UN human rights Chief Navi Pillay.Pillay is briefing the UN Security Council (UNSC) later today on the latest developments in Syria."I think it is time now that the international community will find a common language, will find an answer in the Security Council and condemns these atrocities and these repressions. This is what we owe to those who are under such repression at the moment and we owe it to those who lost their lives," Westerwelle said.He said it was "positive and it shows our engagement that the Security Council will discuss the Syrian issue and the report of Mrs. Pillay. It is necessary to find a common answer and to find a common language." He described the Arab League role as "constructive" and welcomed its latest decisions against Syria."This shows, especially to some member countries in the Security Council that it is not only the will of some western-oriented countries, but it is the will of the people of the region and has nothing to do with any western interventions. It is really the interest of the people which we want to advocate," he added.Westerwelle described Pillay's briefing to the Council later today as "good news and is necessary."
