George A. Fuller to manage Boston courthouse project.

The George A. Fuller Company, a leading international construction firm headquartered in New York City, will serve as Construction Manager on a new $128.4 million Federal Court-house in Boston, Massachusetts.

The 10-story, 600,000-square-foot courthouse will be built on a 4.56-acre site at the Fan Pier in South Boston, alongside Boston harbor.

"This is a vastly important project for the judicial welfare of our city and state," said Boston Mayor Raymond L. Flynn. "The new Federal Courthouse will enormously expand our capacity to accommodate legal activities on a federal level in our city."

The New Federal Courthouse will house 36 courtrooms, as well as a fitness center, a day care center, a cafeteria, a private dining room for judges, a circuit library and public exhibit space.

The structure will feature a facade that is architecturally unique: a 100-foot-high wall of multifaceted glass that will curve like a curtain around the courthouse galleries and atrium facing the Boston waterfront.

Fuller will participate in this joint venture with Parsons Brinkerhoff of Boston. The design architects are Pei Cobb Freed & Partners of New York City in association with Jung/Brannen Associates Inc. of Boston.

The courthouse will replace the outmoded U.S. court facilities situated in the John W. McCormack Post Office and Courthouse Federal Building to furnish more spacious courtrooms and offices in a modern setting. Construction on the steel-framed building, to be sheathed in brick, is scheduled to begin in September, 1993, with completion expected by April, 1997.

The courthouse will accommodate a Chief Judge and seven NonResident Judges in the Court of Appeals, and one Chief Judge, 21 District Judges and six Magistrates in the District Court.
