Gentle sea giant saved by swimmer.

Byline: stephen white

A GIANT manta ray "begged" snorkellers to help save her life.

The 9ft-wide gentle giant, named Freckles by local divers, approached them then flipped over in the water, remaining still to show hooks embedded under her right eye.

Photographer Jake Wilton, diving on Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, said: "I'm often guiding snorkellers and it's as if she recognised me and trusted me to help her."

Jake made repeated dives and got the hooks out with a pair of pliers.

British TV broadcaster Monty Halls, who was with Jake at the time, said: "That manta understood what was going on.

"Jake went down again and again and she just remained still for him."
