CRESWELL - Oregon golfer Kevin Geniza shot 4-under-par 68 to move into a tie for the lead after the second round of the OGA Men's Stroke Play Championship golf tournament on Saturday at Emerald Valley Golf & Resort.
Geniza, who is a 3-under 141 for the tournament, is tied with Nicholas Huff of Ridgefield, Wash., with one round remaining on Sunday. Former NCU and Thurston High golfer Calvin Green of Springfield is a shot back after shooting 71, and former Sheldon High and Oregon golfer Jack Dukeminier, who also shot a 71, is another shot back in fourth.
Eugene's Billy Pollock is tied for sixth at 2-over 146 with three other golfers.
Xiong wins tourney
GLENCOE, Ill. - Oregon sophomore Norman Xiong had to go 22 holes of match play to beat Clemson's Doc Redman and win the 115th Western Amateur Championship golf tournament on Saturday at Skokie Country Club.
Xiong, who also played a semifinal match, played 39 holes in all on Saturday and never trailed against Redman, but Redman won the 16th and 17th to square the match and force sudden death.
Xiong, who was also the stroke-play medalist birdied the 22nd hole to earn the title.
The Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps moved closer to a berth in the championship game, beating North Willamette Valley of Aurora 17-3 in a winner's bracket game at the Northwest American Legion Class A Regional baseball tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.
The Bottlecaps will face Utah Post 87, and 18-6 winner of the Cody (Wyo.) Cubs in the other winner's bracket game, at 6 p.m. Sunday for a berth in the championship game.
