Genius or glove muppet? CUTIE AND THE BOXER.

Byline: With DAVID EDWARDS Movies

Cert 12A, Running time 82mins Mad, bad and sad, these pages have hosted no shortage of indie efforts that defy easy description. Perhaps topping the Weird 100 is this documentary about octogenarian New York painter Ushio Shinohara, whose art consists of throwing paint-covered gloves at a canvas. Put bluntly, don't expect to see any of his pieces in the Tate anytime soon. Following his attempts to make money by finding a wider audience for his art, the film (cough) paints a compelling portrait of a true eccentric with a vast gulf between his dreams and his powers.

Providing much of the humour is his wife who makes for some laugh-out-loud moments as she wavers between unstinting support and utter exasperation.
