Genesee Brewing closes malthouse, contracts with Rahr.

Genesee Corp. of Rochester, NY recently announced that its Genesee Brewing Co. unit has ceased production of malt at its Buffalo, NY malthouse.

The company reports that it has entered into a long-term contract with Rahr Malting Co. of Shakopee, MN.

Genesee reported that it expects to incur one-time, pre-tax expenses of $1.4 million for the fiscal year ending April 30, as a result of the discontinuation of malting operations and the sale of its Buffalo malthouse.

The company reported that the decision to purchase malt commercially instead of continuing to produce it at the Buffalo malthouse is expected to generate savings. The company said this will allow Genesee Brewing to recover the expense associated with the shutdown.
