Gays and straights.

I find it distressing that regardless of the age of those "polled" for Christopher Rice's article "Talking Man to Man" [January 30], not one of those asked has more than a 50% makeup of hetero friends (and, in fact, the majority reported less than 20%). Reading some of these fellows talk about "discrimination" while they turn a blind eye to their own discriminatory social standards is downright laughable. I'm a 34-year-old man who's been out since college, and the makeup of my straight friends hasn't changed throughout my life, pre- and post-coming out: The vast majority of them aren't gay. Not only does this seem to be a most sensible equation, since straight people are the vast majority of the population, it seems to me to be the best way to illustrate to the world that, yes, we are normal human beings just like them. The self-induced ghettoization of the gay "community" both geographically and socially only serves to continue propagating stunted, closed-off worldviews on both sides of the sexual divide.

When asked if he'd be interested in gay marriage, personal trainer Andre qualified his noncommittal reply by saying, "Most of us cheat anyway." I don't cheat, and neither do most of the gay people I know. I also don't believe that gays are more likely than straights to creep around. Andre, you cheat because you're immature, not because you're gay. You need to grow up and work through your internal homophobia. In the meantime, kindly refrain from speaking for our entire community. The last thing we need is one of our own propagating yet another ugly gay stereotype.
