Gas leak closes road.

A ROAD in a Tyneside town centre was cordoned off after a gas leak.

Police closed a section of West Percy Street at the junction with Sidney Street in North Shields yesterday after the leak was reported.

No-one was evacuated but a social club and fish and chip shop remained closed as a precaution.

Officers closed part of the road to allow workmen from Northern Gas Networks to carry out repairs.

A police spokesman said: "We had a report of a minor gas leak at West Percy Street.

"Due to the one-way system it was necessary to cordon off the area, which meant diverting traffic around the leak to keep traffic flowing.

"There were no evacuations. Police community support officers were in the area to reassure the public and to help to keep traffic flowing."

A spokesman from Northern Gas Networks said: "There was a leak in the roadway. But there was no loss of gas supply or any evacuations.

"We were on the scene to carry out repairs".
