Gary: crowd can help us wreck Star.
Four years on, he wants the Jambos fans to carry their side past Red Star Belgrade on a tidal wave of emotion in Thursday's Cup Winners' Cup clash.
Die-hard Mackay scored the opener as Hearts suffered agony and ecstacy against Slavia Prague in the UEFA Cup in 1992.
One down from the first leg, they were in and out of the competition FOUR TIMES on a rollercoaster ride that ended in an amazing 4-2 victory.
This time round Jim Jefferies' men kick off with a goal less draw in Belgrade at their backs.
And Mackay confessed: "I'd LOVE to give the fans another night like the one against Slavia - but they've got their part to play, too.
"We've had a few fantastic scalps in Europe, like Bayern Munich, but that was one of THE great nights of my career.
"It was incredible - and that's the way it's got to be against Red Star on Thursday."
Mackay - facing his 21 st Euro tie - reckons beating Red Star will rank up there with the great Hearts' victories.
He said: "Make no mistake, this will be a real scalp for us if we can win."
The 32-year-old fans' idol insists Hearts CAN book their place alongside the big guns - and give a massive boost to two players sitting in the stand.
Mackay said: "Gary Locke and Craig Levein have contributed as much to this team as anyone and the longer we're in Europe increases their chance of playing a part."
