Gartner reports 32% increase in PDA shipments.
Research firm Gartner has reported a 32% year-on-year increase in global shipments of handheld computers in the second quarter.
According to Gartner, 3.6m units were delivered and shipments of 15m are anticipated by the end of the year. The forecast exceeds 2001's record of 13.2m shipped. Many of the functions of PDAs are now included in mobile phones and the figures from Gartner do not include smartphones which are considered part of the larger handset market.
Gartner reported a growth of 65% to 840,000 units in the quarter for the shipment of BlackBerry e-mail devices, giving vendor Research in Motion a 23% share of the market. Sales of PDAs fell from 2002 to 2004 but Gartner claimed that sales of wireless PDAs have increased as people view them as an add-on or alternative to notebook computers and European customers have been encouraged by favourable exchange rates.
