Gardens in Watercolour.

Gardens in Watercolour, Sharon Finmark. North Pomfret, VT: Trafalgar Square/HarperCollins UK (8800-423-4525), 1999. Illus., 64pp., $15.95 each.

Each of these books on different aspects of watercolor painting from the Collins Learn To Paint Series is similar in format. The books all begin with a brief chapter on the artist/author, move to a discussion of the topic and content to follow, list of needed equipment and supplies, demonstrate basic and advanced techniques, and lead the reader through a series of recommended exercises designed to transmit methods for successful watercolor painting. While the formats are quite similar, each book is distinctive as it addresses a different approach to, or area of, watercolor painting. More than 100 color photos plus related line drawings serve to make all of these books a highly informative visual delight. The text is consistently enlightening and educational in support of the illustrations. Any or all of these books would be helpful for a student at the secondary level or beyond, who wishes to explore the potential of the watercolor medium.
