Garden club is a winner by a smile!

A GARDENING club run purely for a giggle held a sweetpea growing contest just for fun - with an "entry fee" of a Mars bar.

Founded by Len Warden, of St Michael's Close, Weston under Wetherley, the aim of the Ancient and Honourable Association of Armchair Sweetpea Growers is to cheer up people suffering from cancer, ME, MS and other diseases, by holding strange competitions.

This year's competition was won by cancer sufferer Mr Warden himself.

The 76-year-old explained: "I was in hospital for a while and everybody was so miserable, I decided that when I got out I would do something to cheer them up a bit."
