Garage becomes cottage with help of spiral staircase.

In transforming a 1923 garage into a two-story 1,000-square-foot cottage, Los Angeles architect T. Scott MacGillivray had to replace an outdoor stairway to the maid's quarters with an indoor version. To avoid eating up valuable wall space, he installed a 5-foot-wide spiral staircase near the center of the structure.

He first poured a special footing for the anchor plate at the base of the staircase, then poured a new slab around it, leaving the plate recessed 4 inches in concrete.

Around the second-floor stair opening, he tripled the floor joists for more structural stability.
