Gaps and lapses of serious nature in healthcare needs to be identified and corrected-Shahbaz Shareef.
There are gaps and lapses of serious nature in our healthcare set up which needs to be identified and corrected. I have no doubt in the competence of our healthcare professionals who successfully fought the epidemic of Dengue Fever which was eliminated from the province. With the help, support and encouragement of the government, we can have one of the best healthcare set up in the region. If countries like Cuba with not much resources and Islamic Republic of Iran can have excellent health services, why we cannot have that. It may be a bit difficult but certainly not beyond our reach if we all work with devotion and dedication. This was stated by Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Shareef while addressing the First ever Convocation of University of Health Sciences held on December 18th 2015.
The convocation was very well attended by faculty members, Principals of affiliated medical colleges, Vice Chancellors of medial universities, Members of the Board of Governors of UHS, Chairman Higher Education Commission Prof. Mukhtar Ahmad, Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission Prof. Nizamuddin, former Chief Secretary Punjab Mr. Pervez Masood and parents of the postgraduates who were awarded degrees and Gold Medals.
Provincial Government of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Shareef further stated has provided record allocation of funds for health sector and talent and capabilities of our healthcare professionals are recognized the world over where they are doing a commendable job but why we have failed in Pakistan needs a serious discussion. I have already instructed the health department to organize a discussion session inviting eminent academicians, principals, Vice Chancellors and healthcare professionals to critically analyze the whole situation and come up with some feasible, practical recommendations to improve the present state of affairs. We must ensure availability of quality drugs, improve health services, encourage research and improve our drug testing laboratories. If we can have funding for energy sector, transport we can certainly arrange funding for health sector as well but it needs careful planning and effective execution.
Medicine, Mian Shahbaz Shareef further stated is a noble profession and I hope you all believe in it and take care of the sufferings of the ailing humanity. Miseries of the patients are overcome and their ailments cured with your expertise which is cherished by all. You all know that the patients pray for you when they get better which is something you cannot buy with money. Medical Colleges and universities are for training purposes and we have provided lot of funds for that. University of Health Sciences is doing a great job and the presentation by the Vice Chancellor of UHS regarding its performance is very reassuring. He hoped that holding such convocation will now become an annual feature in future. We always used to have a fact of the matter assessment of UHS functioning, used to get sound advice from this university. Vice Chancellor and the Board of Governors of UHS comprises of eminent people from the civil society. It offers critical support for health services in Punjab.
We have a very hard working Advisor Health and I will be too glad to provide any help and assistance for the further progress, development of this university. However, it needs a critical assessment as to why India is much ahead of us in health services. We need to critically examine it. It is upto the healthcare professionals to find the way out of the problems we are facing in health services.
Mian Shahbaz Shareef also referred to the tragic incident of Punjab Institute of Cardiology a few years ago where wrong medication resulting from mix up of anti- malarial raw material with raw material used for producing Cardiovascular preparations in another province resulted in the loss of over one hundred lives. Adulteration in drugs is a very serious issue and all those involved in production of drugs should have a sense of responsibility, check and behave properly. More recently, despite the fact that funds were there, sixteen children is reported to have died due to non-availability of drugs at Children Hospital Lahore which is being investigated. It is a serious laps and such things cannot be ignored and it is not at all acceptable. I will get the investigation report in the next few days and those found guilty will not be spared, he added. With your talent, we can transform the health sector and things can turn around.
Without a good healthcare set up, improvement in education it won't be Quaid-e-Azam's Pakistan, Allama Iqbal's Pakistan and a social welfare State which was envisaged while this country was established as an independent Muslim State., he concluded.
