One week they thrill us with the inventive and funny Kung Fu Chaos, then they revert to type and publish a by-the- numbers uninspiring beat 'em up.
We're not sure what Microsoft Game Studios are playing at, but Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus is straight out of the random martial arts game generator.
The game is set in the fictional country of New China, which in Microsoft's world takes up the western half of the United States. War has broken out between the Pale Lotus and the Black Mantis sects and you must choose your side. There are a dozen fighters, six from each sect, and each has his or her own set of special moves and combos.
All the usual options are here - single fight, quest, survival and multi-player tournaments are all reachable from the main menu.
There is nothing wrong with Tao Feng, except there is absolutely nothing here that we haven't seen before.
