THE students have gone wild...

Young people on the Animal Management studies course at Kirklees College enjoyed lessons with a huge difference when they embarked on a trip of a lifetime with a visit to South Africa.

The 12-day field trip to Johannesburg, taken by the Taylor Hill Centre students, took in everything from a zoo trip to basking in the view of the country's very own Grand Canyon.

The group learned about wildlife conservation and Africa's biodiversity as well as getting up close with animals, while they were based around Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre near the Drakensberg Mountains.

Students visited the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (Pretoria Zoo), Khamai Snake and Reptile Centre and the Blyde River Canyons.

A highlight of the trip included a safari at Kruger Park, where students made observations about the animals' behaviours and habitats, as well as their interactions with other animals.

Animal management lecturer Ann Williams said: "The experience that the students took away is life changing."

Student Sam Lord, from Crosland Moor, said: "Seeing other cultures and animals has convinced me to travel in the hopefully near future."

Chantelle McDade, who got to handle a snake on the trip, said: "It made me realise how desperate animals are in need of help from humans.

"It was breathtaking to be educated with the animals in real life rather than seeing the pictures and it is a memory I will cherish forever."
