Sophia Peabody Hawthorne--200th Birthday Celebration in Salem, Massachusetts (September 19-21, 2009)

A three-day conference celebrated the life of Sophia Peabody Hawthorne as "Artist, Travel Writer, Wife of Nathaniel Hawthorne, One of the Famous Peabody Sisters." Events included a visit to the "World of Women" exhibit at the Barbara Weld Putnam Gallery to see Sophia's artwork; a book signing and reading by Peabody sisters biographer Megan Marshall; and a performance of Dearest Dove: The Courtship of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne, a play featuring the historic romance of Nathaniel and Sophia.

Walking tours through Salem introduced visitors to "Sophia Hawthorne's Salem" while the "Women's History Trolley Tour" made stops at sites relevant to 19th-century women reformers, philanthropists, writers, artists, teachers, and business owners. At the lecture, "Celebrating Sophia Peabody Hawthorne's Two Hundredth Birthday: Her Art, Her Writing, Her Influence," Patricia Dunlavy Valenti gave specific attention to Sophia as an artist and travel writer.
