Gaels JV baseball had a solid year.

CLINTON - The 2011 Clinton High School Gaels junior varsity baseball team produced a solid season, going 10-7.

Coach Bob Bonci had 10 freshmen on his 15-man roster.

"If you had told me in the beginning of the season we'd win 10 games, I would have said, `No way, not this year,'" Bonci said. "This young squad proved me entirely wrong."

After an opening day, 6-3 loss to Nashoba, the young Gaels won their next five games.

"We went on a nice little run during that time," Bonci said. "We were getting good pitching and timely hits."

The pitching staff included junior Bryan Cullen, who went 6-4 with a 3.13 ERA.

"Bryan was our work horse," Bonci said. "He had a solid year for us."

Freshman Josh Bahnick was 2-0, before getting called up to the varsity squad. Junior Cody Prudhomme and sophomore Sean Kilcoyne provided some solid relief effort for the Gaels.

Leading the hitting attack was Bryan Cullen with a .444 batting average. He was followed by freshman Jake Hatch, who caught almost every game and chipped in with a .356 average.

Defensively, the Gaels were led by captain Donnie Dobeck, a sophomore, who played second and shortstop. Freshmen John DeSessia, Andrew Carr and Owen "Coyote" Gannon provided a lot of leather throughout the season at a number of different positions.

Other team members included second baseman Zack Sullivan, third baseman Eliel Colina and shortstop Jean Carlo Perez, who were all sophomores. Freshmen Luke Ellworthy, Matt Alexandrine, Jeremy "Shorty" Casiano and Derek Price all did a nice job for coach Bonci.

"The kids worked hard at practice and gave all they had," Bonci said. "You can't ask for anything else."
