Gabriela solons up in arms over 'foul strip search'.

By Ellson Quismorio

Gabriela Party-List Reps. Emmi de Jesus and Arlene Brosas on Thursday castigated the Makati City police for what they described as the "foul strip search" they conducted on female drug suspects.

"Gabriela Women's Party (GWP) strongly condemns the Makati police's abuse of female drug suspects in their highly irregular strip search, as attested and documented on video by a former anti-drug operative," the lady solons said in a joint statement.

De Jesus and Brosas were referring to a news item wherein a former operative squealed about how cops would order both male and female drug suspects to strip naked and bend over.

The squealer even produced a video featuring a female suspect in her birthday suit within the office of the Makati police Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) as male officers looked on and laughed.

"This speaks of how the police, despite attending human rights trainings, are disturbingly using women for their amusement and satisfaction with gross disregard for the rights of the detained," the Gabriela lawmakers said.

"This is a stern reminder that women have always been easy targets of abuse by the police, just like the gang rape of a female drug suspect by Olongapo cops right inside the police station," they added.

According to the news report, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director, Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar had already ordered three Makati police members sacked in connection with abusive practice.

Meanwhile, Gabriela also denounced the supposed effort of Makati police chief Rogelio Simon to downplay the issue by claiming that the video was a strip search demo.

"We want this incident, which took place in March 2017, probed by the House of Representatives and see if this practice is also being carried out by other police units. Sacking implicated police officers should not excuse them from graver liabilities and penalties," the female solons said.

"Such incidents prod us to step up the #LabananAngAbuso campaign as part of the bigger #BabaeAko movement," they said, referring to their anti-sexual harassment and abuse initiatives.

De Jesus and Brosas are part of the militant Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives.
