GUY GANNETT PUBLISHING CO. ANNOUNCES SALE OF FOCUS NEWSPAPERS

GUY GANNETT PUBLISHING CO. ANNOUNCES SALE OF FOCUS NEWSPAPERS
PORTLAND, Maine, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Guy Gannett Publishing Co. announced today that it has sold the Focus newspaper group of its Minnesota Sun Publications' (MSP) to James D. Kaercher and Richard D. Roberts. Kaercher, owner of Kaercher Publications, Inc. of Ortonville, Minn., has been in the newspaper business for 40 years. Roberts is a former sales manager with the Focus newspapers.
MSP is a group of 29 weekly community publications in the suburban Minneapolis area. The Focus group consists of five papers, serving the communities of Shoreview, Mounds View, South and North Arden Hills, St. Anthony, New Brighton, South Roseville, Falcon and Columbia Heights and Fridley, Minn. Guy Gannett Publishing will continue to operate the remaining 24 publications. The MSP newspapers were purchased by Guy Gannett Publishing in 1987 and have 190 employees.
Lee Canning, vice president of MSP, said Guy Gannett agreed to sell the Focus newspapers because ownership of them was not strategic to Gannett's core operation in the Twin Cities. He added that an advertising sales network arrangement with Focus would give the company the same marketing synergies that currently exist.
As for the Focus newspapers, Kaercher and Roberts said they anticipate making no immediate changes and will retain many of the current employees.
"I'm delighted to once again be intimately involved with these communities," said Roberts, who will be publisher and responsible for operations. "We will be the 'hometown' voice for each of these communities."
In addition to Minnesota Sun Publications, Guy Gannett Publishing owns television, newspaper, broadcast tower and commercial printing operations in six states. The company is in the process of selling four radio stations in Florida. That transaction is expected to be finalized in 1992. Guy Gannett Publishing has approximately 2,000 employees.
Lee Dirks & Associates, a newspaper merger and acquisition firm based in Birmingham, Mich., represented Guy Gannett Publishing in this transaction.
