ROBERTO MARTINEZ has expressed his unhappiness at the "needless" challenge that has left Everton skipper Phil Jagielka facing a spell on the sidelines.

Jagielka left the Emirates on crutches and will have a scan on a knee injury after hobbling off in the second half of the Blues' 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

The centre-back was caught by a late tackle from Gunners winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after referee Lee Mason had already blown for a free-kick for a foul on Brendan Galloway.

And Martinez said: "It'll take probably 48 hours to find out about Phil, but it's not good. Phil Jagielka never leaves the playing field.

"We don't know at this point what extent the injury is. Some of the structure is going to be damaged.

"To lose Phil in such a stupid challenge is disappointing, because the referee has already awarded the free-kick.

"It was an unnecessary challenge. Needless.

& "It's not malicious or with any Report intent. But this is frustrating."
