GUARDIAN INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCES TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH

NORTHVILLE, Mich., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Guardian Industries Corp. ("Guardian") announced today that it has received a U.S. patent on its leading edge Solar Management Glass(R). Solar Management Glass represents a major technological breakthrough in automotive solar glass products.
Based on absorption rather than reflection of harmful, undesirable radiation, Guardian's green Solar Management Glass reduces ultraviolet radiation by almost 40 percent and infrared radiation by as much as 30 percent. "This ability to increase driver and passenger comfort by reducing temperatures inside cars and trucks while also protecting vehicle interiors from damaging infrared and ultraviolet rays has become critical to the automotive industry," said Jack W. Sights, president, Guardian Automotive Products Group.
"This patent is the culmination of a major research and development program by Guardian to provide the automotive industry with the leading product in solar control glass," added Sights. "This patented technology represents but one of the many advances made by Guardian's aggressive and creative technological development group in recent years." Sights praised Guardian's automotive group employees and acknowledged the team effort involved in the development of Solar Management Glass and other technological developments in the automotive glass area, including significant advances in encapsulating automotive glass and in the manufacture of complex geometric shapes to serve the sleek aerodynamic cars of the future.
Guardian is expanding aggressively throughout the world and has made several new major investments to support its growing position as a leading glass supplier to the global automotive industry. New automotive glass fabrication plants in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg, and Ligonier, Ind., in addition to plants in Auburn, Ind., and Upper Sandusky, Ohio, have enabled Guardian to provide high-quality automotive glass components using unparalleled technology.
The Automotive Products Group also includes Guardian's decorative injection-molded plastics subsidiary, Windsor Plastics. Windsor Plastics is a major supplier of painted and plated plastic parts to the automotive and consumer products industries.
Guardian, a diversified manufacturer of flat glass and flat glass products, has been expanding aggressively throughout the world in recent years. In early 1991 Guardian began commercial production of float glass in Hungary, after making one of the largest U.S. investments in Eastern Europe to date. More recently, Guardian began commercial production in new float glass plants in Thailand and India. The India project signifies the largest U.S. equity investment in India within the last decade. Guardian also has a new float line under construction in Navarra, Spain, which, when completed in late 1993, will become Guardian's 14th float plant worldwide. Guardian also has two figure glass lines and extensive glass fabrication facilities in the U.S., Canada and Europe. The company also manufactures a broad line of fiberglass insulation products, and molded plastic products.
