GUANGDONG TELCOM SELECTS NORTEL FOR OPTICAL BACKBONE NET.
The optical backbone network will extend over 1,000 kilometers, covering Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Huizhou, Dongguan and Shantou.
Based on Nortel Networks OPTera Connect DX optical switch, it will unleash for Guangdong Telecom the opportunity to profit from the high-performance Optical Internet by driving massive bandwidth, unparalleled levels of intelligence, and the industry's lowest cost per managed bit. OPTera Connect DX enables quick, seamless delivery of global transport and end-to-end service solutions.
"Selection of Nortel Networks as the sole equipment provider for the Guangdong Telecom 10G project underlines their confidence in our leading-edge technologies, products and capabilities," said Robert Mao, chairman, Nortel Networks China. "We are a world leader in delivering high-performance Optical Internet solutions, as well as the acknowledged leader in deploying next generation 10G Optical Internet technologies in China, with more kilometers of fiber deployed than any competitor."
This is the third time that Nortel Networks has won a 10G optical network award in Guangdong Province. In September 2000, China Unicom Guangdong Branch selected Nortel Networks to build a 1,000-kilometer Optical Internet backbone serving the densely populated Pearl River Delta region. In December 2000, Nortel Networks won an award from China Netcom Corporation (CNC) for an OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System from Guangdong's Shenzhen city to Hong Kong to serve as an international gateway for CNC's packet-based network.
Guangdong is the richest and largest single provincial post and telecommunications market in China, and Guangdong Telecom is the No. 1 China Telecom subsidiary in terms of revenue and number of subscribers of fixed line and data services.
To date, Nortel Networks has won 29 contracts in China for 10G and DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) optical solutions spanning more than 40,000 kilometers. Nortel Networks ranked No. 1 in global long haul DWDM, metropolitan DWDM and SONET/SDH market share in the first quarter of 2001 and for the year 2000, according to the latest report from the Dell'Oro Group.
Nortel Networks is a global leader in networking and communications solutions and infrastructure for service providers and corporations. The company is at the forefront of transforming how the world communicates, exchanges information and profits from the high-performance Internet through capabilities spanning the Optical Internet, Wireless Internet, Intelligent Internet and IP (Internet Protocol) technologies and services. Nortel Networks does business in more than 150 countries.
