GTE OFFERS REMINDER: MAY 2 MARKS END
 OF 213/310 INTERCHANGEABLE DIALING PERIOD
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 1 million GTE telephone customers will say goodbye to an old friend next Friday, May 2, as the 213 area code is phased out and is replaced by the new 310 area code. May 2 marks the end of a six-month transition period.
Since last November, GTE customers have been able to dial either 213 or 310 to complete their calls into the new area code. After 2 a.m. on May 2, however, customers using 213 for a 310 number will hear a recording telling them to use the new area code. There will be 2.4 million assigned numbers in the 310 area code. Of these, 1.1. million will be GTE's customers; 1.3 million will be Pacific Bell's.
While GTE is saying its final goodbye to the 213 area code, Pacific Bell will continue to use the 213 for some of its customers, including those in downtown Los Angeles and some surrounding communities.
The area code change will not affect the cost of calls, said Larry Cox, GTE state manager of public affairs. Calls that were local before the change will remain local after May 2.
The 310 will include the western, coastal, southern and eastern portions of Los Angeles County, including Los Angeles International Airport.
Cox said the six-month transition period was designed to help customers prepare for the new area code. "We notified our customers nearly two years ago about the change," Cox said. "This gave them time to update their phone systems, reorder stationery, change advertising information and notify their family and friends."
Cox said the transition has gone smoothly. "The vast majority of our customers understand the necessity for change, and prefer keeping their telecommunications conveniences to the inevitability of running out of numbers in the 213."
The new area code was made necessary by a technology boom and the population growth in Southern California. Cox said, "Increasing demand for phone lines for car phones, fax machines, computer modems, security systems, pager systems and multiple home phone lines meant we were simply running out of numbers in the 213. With the 310, we will dramatically increase the amount of numbers we can offer our customers, giving Southern California room for continued growth and technological advancement."
The new area code will not affect customers' access to 911 or to the operator, and customers will keep their seven-digit phone numbers.
The 213 has served California since 1947, being split once before when the 818 area code was introduced in 1984.
After next Friday, May 2, California will have 12 area codes, more than any other state in the United States.
In September of 1991, Alameda and Contra Costa counties in Northern California received the 510 area code. And in November 1992, a nine- month interchangeable dialing period begins as the Inland Empire gets the state's 13th area code -- the 909.
