GTE MOBILNET COMPLETES UPGRADE OF ITS DIGITAL CELLULAR NETWORK TO INCLUDE DIGITAL SWITCHING AND CELL SITE EQUIPMENT

HOUSTON, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE, the second-largest cellular service provider in the United States, has successfully completed the nation's largest cellular network conversion by upgrading its 34,000- square-mile Texas network to include a more advanced digital switching system and digital cell site equipment.
The more than $140 million upgrade provides a number of benefits to GTE Mobilnet's Texas cellular customers and is an important step toward providing next generation wireless communications services for cellular telephone users in the future.
With 30 percent greater capacity and improved operational efficiency throughout the network, GTE Mobilnet customers reap immediate benefits from the digital switching and network transmission conversion. These include:
 -- Faster call processing
 -- Clearer sounding calls
 -- Greater call quality
-- Fewer dropped or blocked calls
-- Greater reliability of signal strength regardless of the distance from the cell site.
"In the next few years, digital technology will revolutionize the telecommunications industry," said Jon E. Slater, vice president and general manager for GTE Mobilnet Texas Region. "Our new digital equipment will serve as the foundation that will allow us to offer exciting new services to our customers."
More than 165 cell sites (the individual radio transmitters and receivers that pass calls from area to area) and four central switching systems were converted to AUTOPLEX System 1000, a digital switching system from AT&T Network Systems.
The conversion enables GTE Mobilnet to monitor areas of heavy usage and adjust the network to accommodate increased calling, address any overall system problems more quickly and perform network tune-ups remotely in a fraction of the time previously required.
Because the new system is modular and can be expanded quickly, easily and cost-effectively, the network can support the requirements of a growing market and the demand for new enhanced and custom calling features. These may include remote feature activation and enhanced voice mail services such as automatic fax retrieval and automatic notification of message or fax waiting.
The new equipment transmits calls digitally from the local exchange to the AUTOPLEX switch and from there to the cell site providing greater call clarity and capacity than older analog equipment. In addition, GTE Mobilnet's newly upgraded cellular network will support any of several emerging wireless digital technologies such as Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) or Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). These digital technologies have the potential to greatly enhance a network's capacity over the current analog technology.
GTE Mobilnet owns and operates the largest continuous cellular system in Texas, providing its customers with over 34,000 square miles of toll-free cellular calling from Nacogdoches to the north, Victoria to the south, Austin to the east and Beaumont to the west.
GTE Mobilnet is a wholly owned subsidiary of GTE Corp. (NYSE: GTE). GTE also indirectly owns 90 percent of the outstanding shares of Contel Cellular Inc. (NASDAQ: CCXLA). Through these entities, GTE is the second-largest cellular-service provider in the U.S. serving more than 1 million subscribers.
GTE is the largest U.S.-based local telephone company and the fourth largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world.
