GTE JOINS NISSAN TO PROVIDE DIGITAL-CELLULAR COMMUNICATIONS IN OSAKA AND KYOTO AREAS OF JAPAN

              GTE JOINS NISSAN TO PROVIDE DIGITAL-CELLULAR
            COMMUNICATIONS IN OSAKA AND KYOTO AREAS OF JAPAN
    ATLANTA, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Telecommunications Products & Services-International (GTE TP&S) today announced it has become a partner in TU-KA Phone Kansai Inc., a Japan-based cellular- communications company formed by Nissan Motor Company Ltd.
    The new company will begin operating a high-capacity digital- cellular system by 1994, and anticipates 350,000 Japanese customers by the year 2000.
    "GTE is pleased to participate in the Japanese cellular market, which is the largest in Asia," said Tony Knight, vice president of GTE TP&S International.  "The communications area for this company includes Osaka, Japan's second-largest city, as well as Kyoto, the center of Japanese culture and history.  GTE will own 3 percent of the new company, representing the largest U.S. shareholding."
    Knight noted that this is GTE TP&S's second cellular partnership in Japan.  GTE also owns a 3 percent equity stake in TU-KA Cellular Tokyo, a digital-cellular company formed in July 1991 by Nissan and DDI Corp. to provide digital-cellular communications in the Tokyo area.
    GTE TP&S is one of GTE's three operating groups.  It consists of GTE Mobile Communications, GTE Spacenet, GTE Government Systems, GTE Information Services and GTE Airfone.  GTE formed the group in 1990 to take advantage of synergies that exist between the units.
    GTE's Tokyo-based GTE-Far East Services Ltd. has operated in Japan since 1974, and the company is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.  GTE subsidiaries operate in 48 states and 41 countries, with combined revenues and sales of $21.4 billion and net income of $1.7 billion in 1990.
