GTE FOUNDATION PROVIDES FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR FLOOD-RELIEF EFFORTS; GTE EMPLOYEES DONATE GOODS

STAMFORD, Conn., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The GTE Foundation today announced a commitment of $150,000 to support relief efforts for flood victims in the Midwest. The contribution will be equally divided between two of the major relief organizations involved in providing assistance to flood victims, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
"The GTE Foundation recognizes the tremendous work the American Red Cross and Salvation Army are doing for all those affected by the flooding," said Maureen Gorman, vice president of the GTE Foundation.
In addition to the monetary contribution from the GTE Foundation, employees from various GTE business units have held their own drives to gather and donate food and clothing for flood victims. For example, more than 700 cartons of clothing and other items were collected by Dallas-area GTE employees and distributed through the Salvation Army.
As previously announced, Contel Cellular Inc., which is 90 percent owned by GTE, distributed 25 cellular phones and five portable-emergency GOPAC(A) telecommunications units to help manage flood-relief operations in Iowa and Illinois. The equipment has been loaned to emergency, government and other organizations, including the American Red Cross; the Salvation Army; the State of Iowa; Scott County, Iowa; Rock Island County, Ill.; Andalusia, Ill., Fire Department; and, Iowa American Water Company.
Fifty-five cellular lines are now in use by the organizations. When the relief effort is completed, Contel Cellular estimates it will have donated air time valued between $75,000 and $100,000.
In the Tampa Bay area, GTE Mobilnet provided cellular phones and air time for use by the Jaycees in their efforts to collect bottled water for flood victims.
GTE is the largest U.S.-based local telephone company and the second-largest cellular-service provider in the United States.
