GTE DEMONSTRATES INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY AT HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING AND NETWORKING CONFERENCE.
RESTON, Va., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE today began demonstrating a high-speed, broadband telecommunications network of the future at the High Performance Computing and Networking Conference sponsored here Dec. 8 and 9 by George Washington University. Designed and integrated by GTE Government Systems Corp., the network allows conference participants to simultaneously exchange and process a wide variety of advanced telecommunications services with operations at several other sites in Virginia. These services include live 3-D videoconferencing, weather displays, medical and defense-related desk- top multimedia, radiology images from super computers, enhanced video and animated images. "This demonstration provides a window into the full potential of an integrated and interoperable national information infrastructure (NII) envisioned for the 21st century," said Nick Brienza, vice president and general manager of Defense Information Systems for GTE Government Systems. A true superhighway for information, the network combines the telecommunications technologies of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching, synchronous optical network (SONET), fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) rings and a fiber wide area network (WAN) with high- performance processing equipment from Cray Research Inc., Sun, and Silicon Graphics Computer Systems, and advanced display capabilities from Sony. The distributed-computing network features a transport infrastructure made up of a robust mix of narrowband and broadband technologies from a wide variety of other manufacturers. "The network demonstrates that advanced telecommunications systems are possible today over existing optical-fiber networks when they are linked with ATM and SONET technology. The network may also be used to bring together civilian and military users in a 'dual use' environment, also envisioned in the NII," said Brienza. GTE Government Systems provides integrated-systems solutions tailored for information processing and communications needs, and is a leading developer and supplier of command, control and communications systems for governments, military forces and commercial applications worldwide. GTE is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world. -0- 12/8/93 /CONTACT: Bob Bishop of GTE Corporation, 703-818-5474, or after 5 p.m., 703-378-4684/ (GTE)
