GTE DATA SERVICES ANNOUNCES $35 MILLION CONTRACT WITH BELL CANADA
TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Data Services and Bell Canada today jointly announced a multi-year contract valued in excess of $35 million in which GTE will provide multiple information systems to Bell Canada, including its Customer Billing Services System (CBSS). The two companies also have signed a memorandum of understanding stating their intention to explore cooperative business activities in the area of telecommunications information-management systems.
CBSS is an advanced and highly flexible customer-billing system which produces detailed bills that are easy-to-read and understand. GTE Data Services and Bell Canada will begin immediately to develop enhancements to the system and plan to have CBSS begin serving Bell's customers in 1994. As part of the contract, Bell Canada also receives licenses for other systems from GTE Data Services. The systems work in conjunction with CBSS to correct toll errors and to identify and resolve fraudulent usage.
Alliance To Develop New Technologies for the Global Telecommunications Market
Also, the two companies recently entered into an alliance with the intent to cooperatively define, develop and test new technologies on information-systems solutions, particularly in customer-billing systems.
"The alliance calls for Bell Canada and GTE Data Services to undertake a study to analyze and evaluate existing and potential areas for cooperation in the global telecommunications market," said Don A. Hayes, president of GTE Data Services. Based on the recommendations of the study, the two companies may pursue additional business relationships.
"This agreement will help to ensure that Bell continues its leadership position in the changing telecommunications market in Canada, and will also allow us to seize business opportunities in the area of telecommunications information-management systems," Bell Canada President and CEO Robert Kearney said.
CBSS is GTE's customer-billing system for its telephone operations throughout the United States. GTE presently serves more than 16 million customers in 40 states. GTE is the largest U.S.-based local-telephone company.
GTE Data Services is one of the largest software development and information-processing service companies in the United States. A part of GTE Telephone Operations, its corporate headquarters is in Temple Terrace, Fla. GTE is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world.
Bell Canada is the largest Canadian telecommunications operating company, marketing a full range of state-of-the-art products and services to more than seven million business and residence customers in Ontario and Quebec.
