GTE CONFIRMS SELECTION AS LEAD CONSORTIUM IN BID FOR CELLULAR LICENSES IN ARGENTINA

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE today announced that its consortium in Argentina, Compania de Telefonos del Interior (CTI), which is seeking two cellular licenses here, has been ranked number one by the National Telecommunications Commission (CNT) of Argentina, based on initial bid submissions.
"We are delighted that CNT has recognized the GTE consortium as the most qualified thus far to quickly bring modern wireless communications technology to the Argentine people," said Lee K. Toole, Group Vice President-International for GTE Mobile Communications International Inc. "With our submission today of additional information on the service we will provide and the schedule of implementation, we look forward to the official award of the tendered licenses enabling us to serve 22 million Argentines in the interior of the country," Toole stated.
GTE's partners in the consortium include AT&T (10 percent interest); AGEA (22 percent interest); TCW (5 percent interest); CAI (20 percent interest) and Benito Roggio (20 percent interest). GTE has a 23 percent stake.
"GTE and AT&T, two of the largest publicly held telecommunications companies in the world, along with our partners are uniquely able to financially, technically and operationally implement our aggressive proposal," said Toole. "No other consortium has equivalent financial and technical resources and the commitment to use those resources in Argentina, as evidenced by their proposals," Toole noted.
GTE is the largest U.S.-based local telephone company and the second-largest cellular-service provider in the United States. With $20 billion in revenues in 1992, the corporation is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world. GTE also is a leader in government and defense communications systems and equipment, satellite and aircraft-passenger telecommunications, directories and telecommunications-based information services and systems.
