GTE AND ITT TEAM TO ENHANCE BATTLEFIELD DATA
 DISTRIBUTION CAPABILITY FOR U.S. ARMY
WASHINGTON, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Government Systems Corp.'s Mobile Subscriber Equipment Division (MSED) and the Aerospace/Communications Division of ITT Defense, Inc., have signed a teaming agreement to enhance the U.S. Army's battlefield data distribution capability.
This joint effort will result in the Integrated Data Transport System (IDTS). IDTS will integrate GTE's field proven Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE) data system with ITT's Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS). MSE is the Army's backbone communications network, providing wide-area connectivity across the battlefield, and SINCGARS is the Army's widely deployed front-line radio system.
By teaming, GTE and ITT join their complementary talents and capabilities to provide a management and technical response to the growing need for data transport on the battlefield. With enhancements to MSE and SINCGARS, the Army's two premier tactical communication systems can be integrated into a cost effective data transport system with seamless interoperability among MSE and SINCGARS users. GTE and ITT are preparing to demonstrate the basic functions of this integrated data transport system in the fall of 1992.
By integrating MSE and SINCGARS, IDTS is intended to satisfy the Army's operational requirements for the transport of data throughout the battlefield. The integration of these two widely deployed systems and the associated advanced networking features will meet many of the emerging requirements for battlefield data transport. Because the IDTS is a derivative of already deployed systems, it can be introduced incrementally at low risk, with minimum impact on the life cycle costs of the deployed systems.
In a joint press conference held today, Dr. Marvin Sambur, president, ITT Defense, Aerospace/Communications Division, based in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Bernard Resnick, vice president and general manager, MSE Division of GTE Government Systems, based in Taunton, Mass., stated, "The team of GTE and ITT believes innovative solutions of this kind will maintain U.S. battlefield technological superiority in an era of tight budgets."
