GTE AND AT&T ANNOUNCE MAJOR, STRATEGIC CELLULAR-SERVICE
AGREEMENT; MAKING CELLULAR SHOPPING EASIER
ATLANTA, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Mobile Communications and AT&T today announced an agreement to provide customers cellular-mobile telephone service through GTE's cellular subsidiaries, GTE Mobilnet and Contel Cellular. GTE service will be available at 73 AT&T Phone Center stores in more than 67 GTE markets nationwide.
While shopping for mobile telephones, customers will be able to conveniently subscribe to cellular service at the AT&T Phone Centers in GTE Mobilnet and Contel Cellular markets. The markets include San Francisco/San Jose, Houston, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Memphis, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., Richmond, Va., and El Paso, Texas, among others.
Customers also will be able to choose from a new line of AT&T cellular phones. Initially, AT&T's portable and mobile-cellular phones will be available. The transmobile models, which are larger, more powerful portable units, will be in the phone centers in January 1992.
One Stop Mobile Shopping "For consumers, it means convenient one- stop mobile service and assures quality service, before, during and after the sale," said Paul G. Kozlowski, president-GTE Mobile Communications. "This represents a real marketing advantage for GTE -- it increases our points of retail distribution and strengthens our alliance with a telecommunications leader."
"With AT&T's quality products, combined with GTE's outstanding local network service and timely activations, we plan to make AT&T Phone Centers convenient, one-stop shopping stores," said Robert Cash, general manager of the Cellular Telephone Business Unit in AT&T's Consumer Products Division. "There is no more important partner to our business than GTE, and working together allows us to provide our customers with the best cellular offer in the industry."
In addition to the agreement to provide cellular service, GTE Intercarrier Service Bureau was recently selected to centrally activate customer's cellular-phone service through its DASH (Direct Access Service Hub) system in more than 250 AT&T Phone Centers across 100 cellular markets, nationwide. According to Kozlowski, this means customers' cellular service will be up and running faster.
GTE Mobile Communications, a part of GTE Telecommunications Products & Services, provides support to GTE's cellular interests -- GTE Mobilnet, a wholly owned subsidiary and Contel Cellular Inc., a ninety percent-owned GTE company. GTE is a world leader in telecommunications, with combined revenues and sales in 1990 of $21.4 billion and net income of $1.7 billion.
