GTE AIRFONE TO SUPPLY TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICES AS SKYTEL AND AIR CANADA LAUNCH SEATFONE INFLIGHT TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICE THROUGHOUT CANADA
OAK BROOK, Ill., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Airfone(R) announced today that it is providing Skytel Communications Corp. of Canada with its proprietary air-to-ground Seatfone(TM) system technology and equipment under a licensing agreement. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Also, Airfone is providing engineering services and support to Air Canada as it installs the Seatfone system -- 6,000 telephones -- on 90 aircraft by April 30, 1992. Air Canada is the first and only airline in Canada to offer Seatfone service to passengers.
"We're enthusiastic about helping to expand inflight telecommunications service in Canada," said Robert C. Calafell, president of GTE Airfone. "We've been working with Skytel and Air Canada since 1987 to provide air-to-ground telecommunications, and this new agreement extends availability of the service to passengers, providing telephones in every row within easy reach."
 Integrating U.S. and Canadian Communications
Calafell also noted that Skytel's ground network operates in conjunction with GTE Airfone's U.S.-based network, resulting in an integrated North American communications system that benefits airline passengers in both countries.
GTE Airfone, based here, is part of the GTE Telecommunications Products and Services Group. It provides inflight telecommunications service in conjunction with 13 U.S. airlines. GTE Railfone, a wholly owned subsidiary of GTE Airfone, provides public-telephone access on major Amtrak routes on the East and West coasts through a joint venture with the National Railroad Passenger Corp.
Founded in 1982, Skytel Communications, a subsidiary of BCE Mobile, is the pioneer and a leader in air-to-ground telecommunications in Canada. Skytel has partnered with Air Canada to offer inflight telecommunications in Canada.
