GTE, BFI WASTE MANAGEMENT TEAM WITH RAIDERS
 FOR RECYCLING EVENT OCT. 4
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Don't trash that old telephone directory -- recycle it. GTE and BFI waste management are teaming with the Los Angeles Raiders to help people dispose of their old telephone directories in an environmentally responsible way.
GTE volunteers will collect old telephone directories at each Coliseum entrance gate on Sunday, Oct. 4 when the Raiders play the New York Giants. Everyone at the game will also get a special commemorative poster from GTE, a souvenir of the ceremony to honor Raiders owner Al Davis for his recent introduction to the NFL Hall of Fame.
After the game, BFI Waste Management will haul the directories away for recycling. The company is in partnership with GTE for a directory recycling effort that spans the entire city and surrounding areas, especially in GTE's telephone service area.
Mike Crawford, vice president and general manager of GTE West area, explains the company's involvement: "Although telephone directories make up less than one-half of 1 percent of landfill space, every contribution to environmental protection is important. GTE recognizes its natural role in leading efforts for telephone directory recycling."
BFI has been in business since 1972 in the Los Angeles area and collects solid wastes and recyclables from single- and multifamily residences and commercial and industrial customers. BFI currently has 867 commercial recycling programs in operation, serving nearly 13,000 customers.
People who can't make it to the game can still turn in their old telephone directories for recycling as part of local community efforts organized in partnership with GTE. For example, Long Beach, the South Bay, Santa Barbara and the Inland Empire all have organized efforts on a wide community basis. Local GTE offices have information on their community-based programs.
