         TECHNOLOGY WITH BROADBAND TECHNOLOGIES' FLX SYSTEM
    IRVING, Texas, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Telephone Operations today announced that it will begin testing fiber-to-the-curb -- in addition to fiber-to-the-home -- to provide both telephone and video services.  The test will involve a "fiber loop access" (FLX) system provided by BroadBand Technologies Inc. (BBT).  The test will be conducted at GTE's advanced technological test bed in Cerritos, Calif.
    GTE will use BBT's FLX system to further test the use of fiber-optic technology in its local network for both residential telephone service and video applications, and to verify the technical benefits of digital video.
    Installation and testing of the BBT FLX system will begin in April, and full system turn-up is expected in June.
    "Since Cerritos is GTE's most advanced technological test bed, it is only fitting that we test a system such as this in the city," said Tom Edwards, GTE assistant vice president of staff planning and engineering. "This is GTE's first test of both residential telephone service and video using a fiber-to-the-curb technology."
    GTE has installed nearly 2,500 miles of underground fiber-to-the- home in Cerritos.  This fiber-to-the-curb testing will augment GTE's existing fiber-to-the-home tests.
    The fiber-to-the-curb test will include approximately 50 Cerritos homes, which will be connected directly to GTE's public telephone network and to video service offerings via the FLX system.
    Information Carried As Light Pulses
    Fiber optics are hair-thin strands of ultra-pure glass that transmit signals as pulses of laser light.  Fiber-optic cables can carry 2 billion bits of information per second, whereas traditional copper telephone wire carries about 64,000 bits of information per second.

    Broadband Technologies Inc., based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., is a developer and manufacturer of fiber-in-the-loop transport systems for telephony and video services.  The company was founded in 1988.
    GTE Telephone Operations, a wholly owned GTE subsidiary, is the largest U.S.-based, local telephone company, providing local phone service through more than 20 million access lines in portions of 40 states, British Columbia, Quebec, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
