GSA REACHES AGREEMENT TO KEEP WORDPERFECT ON SCHEDULE

WASHINGTON, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) today announced it has reached agreement with WordPerfect for continued inclusion of WordPerfect's software products on GSA's Multiple Award Schedule (MAS) contracts for 1993-94. The agreement, which has price decreases ranging from 15 percent to 25 percent compared to last year's prices, is expected to save the government about $2 million.
The MAS contracts for the software of several major companies lapsed April 1. GSA could not award new MAS contracts for those software packages because the agency was not satisfied that schedule contract prices were reasonable. Even though the government buys large quantities, last year's schedule prices were higher than the prices paid by some state governments and some smaller commercial buyers.
In recent weeks GSA, software manufacturers and schedule offerors have been engaged in extensive negotiations. As a result of these negotiations, GSA reached agreement with WordPerfect and one of its distributors -- Softmart, Inc. of Exton, Pa. Softmart's MAS contract pricing for the popular WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 commercial "shrink-wrap" packages is only 15 percent lower than the best 1992-93 schedule prices.
Schedule customers who already have a WordPerfect license and need additional licenses can realize even greater savings. Additional right- to-copy WordPerfect licenses are available from Softmart at per-license savings of nearly 50 percent over the comparable shrink-wrap product. Softmart's right-to-copy contract prices represent savings of 25 percent compared to the 1992-93 schedule prices.
Agreements with additional distributors for inclusion of WordPerfect products on their MAS contracts are expected to be reached within a week.
