GSA BUYS NEW CARROLLTON SITE FOR IRS HEADQUARTERS CONSOLIDATION
WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Administrator Richard G. Austin of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) said the agency has purchased for $21,492,000 a 30.22-acre tract at the New Carrollton, Md., Metro station on which to build a 1.2 million- square-foot U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) headquarters building in Prince George's County, Md.
The property -- bounded by Harkins and Ellin Roads -- was part of the "Metroview" development owned by Vingarden Associates.
Austin said the new facility will consolidate about 4,400 IRS employees from several leased locations in Washington.
A Phase I Environmental Assessment for the site was completed in May, and an Environmental Impact Statement was finished in July.
Austin said GSA plans to award a "design/build" contract for the building next spring and construction is scheduled for completion by mid-1997.
