GRUPO GIGANTE AND TANDY INTERNATIONAL FORM JOINT VENTURE
TO OPEN RADIO SHACK STORES IN MEXICO
MEXICO CITY, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Grupo Gigante, S.A. de C.V. and Tandy International Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tandy Corp. (NYSE: TAN), announced today a joint venture to open Radio Shack Technology Stores nationwide in Mexico. Radio Shack de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. is the newly formed joint venture company which will operate the stores.
The joint venture builds on a solid on-going relationship between Grupo Gigante and Tandy. Gigante has had a licensing agreement to distribute Tandy products in Mexico's Radio Shack stores since 1986.
Angel Losada Moreno, executive vice president of Grupo Gigante, is chairman of the new company. Guido Pentsy, a 10-year veteran of Radio Shack, has been named director general and will be responsible for operations. Commenting on the joint venture, Losada said, "We're very pleased to continue our relationship with Tandy through this joint venture. It is another step in Gigante's flexible approach to developing a national retail network that meets Mexico's needs. With this structure, we believe we'll be able to deliver even more Radio Shack products to the people of Mexico."
"Our objective is to combine Grupo Gigante's retail expertise in the Mexican marketplace with Radio Shack's 71 years of experience in operating consumer electronics specialty stores. The joint venture will allow Radio Shack to expand quickly in this explosive market," said Bernard Appel, senior vice president of Tandy Corp. and a director of the joint venture company.
There are currently 24 Radio Shack stores in Mexico which have been operated by Gigante, S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Grupo Gigante. These stores will become part of Radio Shack de Mexico. The new company plans to open approximately 50 stores annually. Radio Shack de Mexico will also operate a support center in Mexico City to provide prompt service for the products sold in Mexico.
The Radio Shack de Mexico stores will offer most of the products sold in Radio Shack's retail stores in the United States. These products will include high-quality audio/video electronic products, electronics, parts, accessories and other electronics, such as computers, telephones and calculators.
One of Mexico's strongest nationwide retailers, Grupo Gigante operates 111 self-service stores under the "Gigante" name throughout Mexico. In 1991, annual sales exceeded $1.6 billion.
