GRUMMAN FORMS JOINT VENTURE WITH LOUIS SAIA III
 BETHPAGE, N.Y., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Grumman Corporation

(NYSE: GQ) announced today that a subsidiary of its Allied Division will form a joint venture company with Louis Saia III to manufacture and market pallet reefers, which are temperature-controlled, insulated shipping containers. Saia, who is president of Saia Motor Freight and owner of Luciano Refrigerated Transport, both headquartered near New Orleans, is the inventor and holder of the patent for the pallet reefer concept. The Grumman Allied Group will establish a subsidiary called Allied Transportation Products, Inc., for this venture.
The new partnership will be named The Pallet Reefer Company. The pallet reefer is designed for "less than truckload" shipments of temperature-sensitive goods. Shippers won't have to wait for space on refrigerated trailers; they can ship their products to market daily on any dry freight trailer. Products will reach their destination quickly, efficiently and without the temperature changes that occur when refrigerated trailer doors are opened and closed for repeated pickups or deliveries.
The pallet reefer is approximately 4 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet, and has walls made of fiberglass-clad foam. Integral to the box is a steel pallet for easy forklift handling. The self-sustaining container has a liquid CO2-based system, providing up to four days of accurate temperature control.
Saia has already tested prototypes; Grumman Allied has designed and developed the proposed production model. The pallet reefers will be produced initially at Grumman's Long Life Vehicle facility in Montgomery, Pa. Production will expand to other Allied plants as demand increases.
Grumman Corporation is best known as a leading international aircraft and aerospace company. Other businesses range from sophisticated integrated information and electronics systems to U.S. Postal service delivery trucks. Headquartered in Bethpage, Grumman employs 22,800 people. Revenues were $4 billion in 1991.
