GRUMMAN EXPERIMENT FLIES ABOARD U.S. MICROGRAVITY LAB
BETHPAGE, N.Y., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- A Grumman Corporation (NYSE: GQ) experiment sponsored by NASA is aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia as part of the U.S. Microgravity Laboratory's first mission. The Microgravity Lab houses 31 experiments in biological and materials sciences, fluid physics and others. The Grumman experiment deals with the in-space processing of high-quality semiconductors, to be used in infrared detectors for space-based Earth observation systems.
Crystals are the basis of semiconductors, and a crystal's form determines its function. To study both crystals and their uses, scientists need to have crystals that are as perfect as possible. In microgravity, nearly perfect crystals can be grown because gravity causes flaws.
Grumman's experiment investigates the influence of gravity on the growth and quality of alloyed compound semiconductors using cadmium zinc telluride crystals.
The Grumman experiment is one of four experiments that will use the crystal growth furnace on the Microgravity Lab during the 13-day Shuttle mission. The crystal will be examined after the mission and compared to similar crystals grown on earth.
Grumman Corporation is best known as a leading international aircraft and aerospace company. Other businesses range from sophisticated integrated information and electronics systems to U.S. Postal Service delivery trucks. Headquartered in Bethpage, N.Y., Grumman employs more than 22,450 people. Revenues were $4 billion in 1991.
