GRUMMAN EXPANDS, EXTENDS ITS TELECOM BUSINESS WITH SPRINT

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Grumman Corp. (NYSE: GQ), one of the nation's leading aerospace manufacturers, has expanded and extended its contract with Sprint (NYSE: FON) for a full range of telecommunications services for another three years.
In the process, Grumman roughly tripled its use of Sprint for inbound "800" service.
Grumman previously had elected to use Sprint for a small number of its inbound 800 lines. The advent of "800 portability," a federally mandated move to open the world of 800 service to competition, allowed Grumman to expand its usage of Sprint.
On May 1, the Federal Communications Commission made it possible for 800 service customers to shift their circuits to other long distance carriers without giving up the specific phone numbers they had advertised to the public.
The new contract, which also covers outbound Virtual Private Network services, TeleMedia enhancements and the provision and management of a national data network, is worth an estimated $10.8 million at current usage levels. Grumman's new 800 business is worth an estimated $540,000 in additional revenue over the contract period.
"We opted to renew and extend this contract even before it expired because of our satisfaction with Sprint's overall delivery of service and their competitive pricing," said Al Fitterman, director of networks at Grumman. "We've had an excellent partnership, and that's exactly the way we view it -- as a partnership. Their quality approach is to do whatever needs to be done on our behalf."
The national data network provided and managed by Sprint connects Grumman's headquarters in Bethpage, N.Y., and nine key Grumman facilities in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, California, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The network supports a wide variety of applications, ranging from internal payroll accounting to interactive graphic design work by multiple divisions to the transmission of imaging.
The new TeleMedia work involves support for a new communications network to speed and simplify the flow of benefits information to Grumman employees around the nation.
"We view this decision by Grumman to expand our relationship as something that reflects the dedication of our employees to 'Be There Now' for our customers," said Kevin E. Brauer, the president of Sprint's Business Market Group. "Working together, we've made a difference for this customer."
Grumman is best known as a leading international aircraft and aerospace company. Other businesses range from sophisticated integrated information and electronics systems to U.S. Postal Service delivery trucks. Grumman employs 20,000 people. Revenues were $3.5 billion in 1992.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 6 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
