GRUMMAN AWARDED CONTRACT TO BUILD SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS
BETHPAGE, N.Y., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Grumman Corporation (NYSE: GQ) today signed a contract to build superconducting dipole magnets for the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. The contract is valued at $42.7 million.
Grumman will build 373 superconducting dipole magnets. The magnets will be an integral part of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), a particle accelerator now under construction at Brookhaven. The Grumman contract is the largest single procurement for the RHIC program.
When RHIC is completed in 1997, it will be the world's foremost facility for nuclear physics research. RHIC will collide subatomic particles called heavy ions at high energies to recreate hot, dense plasma of quarks and gluons believed to have existed in the early universe immediately after the Big Bang. The magnets will guide the heavy ions, which will travel at nearly the speed of light, as they circulate in opposite directions around two intersecting rings within a tunnel 2.5 miles in circumference.
Grumman Corporation is best known as a leading international aircraft and aerospace company. Other businesses range from sophisticated integrated information and electronics systems to U.S. Postal Service delivery trucks. Headquartered in Bethpage, N.Y., Grumman employs 22,500 people. Revenues were $4 billion in 1991.
