GROUNDWATER TECHNOLOGY, INC. ANNOUNCES MARKETING AGREEMENT FOR FUNGAL REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY AND NEW GENERAL MANAGER

GROUNDWATER TECHNOLOGY, INC. ANNOUNCES MARKETING AGREEMENT FOR FUNGAL
REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY AND NEW GENERAL MANAGER
NORWOOD, Mass., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Groundwater Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: GWTI) a world leader in on-site remediation of soil and groundwater, has been granted exclusive, long-term marketing rights to fungal products for hazardous waste treatment developed and manufactured by Mycotech Corporation of Butte, Mont. Both laboratory and field tests have demonstrated that these products, which occur naturally, are effective in degrading a wide range of organic contaminants, including heavy petroleum hydrocarbons, creosote, coal tars, chlorinated solvents, pesticides and PCBs.
According to Walter C. Barber, President and Chief Executive Officer of Groundwater Technology: "The Mycotech fungal products technology, in combination with our own expertise in soil science and bioremediation, has the potential to provide faster, more cost-effective systems for treating petroleum hydrocarbons now treated with bioremediation, as well as compounds not treated particularly well with bioremediation. In the past, the only effective treatment for certain contaminants has been the expensive process of incineration."
Mr. Barber further stated that using fungi to treat hazardous waste has not been a remedial option because manufacturing technology was not capable of economically producing sufficient quantities of appropriate fungi. To solve this problem, Mycotech has adapted solid culture technology to an automated system capable of dramatically increasing yields. For fungal products that treat petroleum hydrocarbons, Mycotech's proprietary manufacturing technology produces a non-toxic, non-engineered, dry fungal powder which is easily shipped and handled at the contamination site.
The fungi degrade the hydrocarbons into simple compounds such as carbon dioxide and water. Since the fungi are naturally occurring organisms, no genetic manipulation is required.
Funds obtained by Mycotech from Groundwater Technology, Inc. in connection with the agreement will be used for construction of a commercial manufacturing facility for fungal remediation products. It is anticipated that this facility will be completed in 1993. In addition, present production capacity will be increased to meet demands over the next 12 months. Commercial fungal treatment systems will be available from Groundwater Technology in late 1992. In the meantime, Groundwater Technology will conduct pilot projects using Mycotech's present production capacity.
Mycotech Corporation, founded in 1982, is a leading developer and producer of innovative fungal products. The company has 16 employees, including seven full-time research and development specialists. Major efforts have focused on the development and production of fungi for biopesticides and hazardous waste treatment. Mycotech's proprietary fungal production technology provides the key to successful, commercial application of these biotechnology products.
Separately, Groundwater Technology, Inc. has announced the appointment of Glenn V. Batchelder as General Manager of the Company's equipment manufacturing division, ORS Environmental Equipment. Batchelder has extensive experience in the design and installation of remedial technology. He has been with the Company for more than six years and has held operations and staff positions. Batchelder will focus initially on developing more cost effective manufacturing processes and developing new product offerings including pre-engineered remedial systems for the UST market.
Groundwater Technology, Inc. is one of the world's largest consulting and remediation firms. Since 1975, the company has been a pioneer in the application of new technologies to provide increasingly cost-effective solutions for contaminated soil and groundwater. Groundwater Technology is internationally recognized for its leadership in the application of bioremedial technologies, and continues to focus on developing treatment programs to destroy contamination on site. The company also operates a network of full service analytical laboratories and manufactures precision monitoring and recovery equipment. Groundwater Technology has 1,900 employees in 64 offices throughout North America, Europe and Australia.
