 CONSUMER BRANDS BUSINESS; HUNTER TO RETIRE
 PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Harry Groome, president of SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories, has been named chairman of SmithKline Beecham Consumer Brands, it was announced today by SmithKline Beecham (NYSE: SBH) Chief Executive Robert Bauman.
 Groome succeeds John F.B. Hunter, who announced his intention to retire at the end of December 1992 after more than 35 years with the company. Groome's appointment as chairman of Consumer Brands takes effect May 1. A successor to Groome as president of SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories will be announced at a later date.
 Groome, 54, has served in many important roles in his 26 years with the company, including vice president, International Operations, Proprietary and Cosmetic Products; and vice president/area director- Latin America, Pharmaceuticals. He was appointed vice president, marketing-U.S. Pharmaceuticals in 1979 and was named president of Clinical Laboratories in 1985.
 Born in Philadelphia, Groome holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He is past president of the American Clinical Laboratory Association, a member of the board of directors of Allergan Inc. (NYSE: AGN), and a Chapter Director of the Nature Conservancy.

 Hunter, 55, joined the company in 1957 as a management trainee. He held positions of increasing responsibility in marketing in the U.K. and overseas. In 1976 he was appointed managing director, Beecham Products, in the U.K. He assumed responsibility for consumer products in Western Europe in 1980. In 1984 he became chairman, Food and Drinks Division. In 1987 he was appointed chairman, Beecham Products, Europe and International. He became chairman, Beecham Products, Worldwide, in 1988 and assumed responsibility for the combined consumer brands businesses at the time of the merger of SmithKline and Beecham in 1989. "Under his guidance SmithKline Beecham's Consumer Brands business has flourished, achieving excellent growth year to year in both sales and profits," said Bauman.
 SmithKline Beecham is a world leader in healthcare, marketing prescription and over-the-counter medicines, consumer brands, animal health products and clinical laboratory services. The worldwide consumer business had 1990 sales of $2.6 billion, led by such well known brands as Tums, Contac, Aquafresh, Oxy and Ecotrin.
