WILLIAMSPORT, Pa., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- George W. Groce of Kernersville, N.C., was named recipient of the 1992 Little League Volunteer of the Year Award, sponsored by Phoenix Home Life, today at a press conference held in Williamsport, Pa.
Groce was presented with the national public service award by Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer, Robert W. Fiondella, president of Phoenix Home Life and Dr. Creighton J. Hale, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball, Inc.
"Phoenix Home Life is proud to sponsor this award because it provides an opportunity to recognize the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who make Little League happen for youngsters in their local community. George Groce exemplifies this volunteer spirit and is an outstanding representative of Little League's volunteer spirit," said Fiondella.
Regional winners William Anthony of Connecticut (eastern), Joe and Freda Calhoun of Ohio (central) and George W. Coakley of Arizona (western) were also present to receive their finalist award by Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer.
The national winner was selected by a panel of judges: Senators Bill Bradley (NJ); Robert Dole (KS); George Mitchell (ME); Joseph Lieberman (CT); and Representatives Michael Andrews (TX); Richard Gephardt (MO); Nancy Johnson (CT) and Charles Rangel (NY). Also: Jim Palmer (formerly Baltimore Orioles); Brian Sipe (formerly Cleveland Browns); Al Michaels (ABC Sports); Donna de Varona (ABC Sports); Little League's president, Dr. Creighton Hale; Chairman of the Board of Little League, Dr. Luke Larorta, and past Little League Volunteers of the Year, Ed Janser, Connecticut (1989).
