GREEN SEAL ANNOUNCES FIRST CERTIFICATION MARK; THE NON-PROFIT ENVIRONMENTAL SEAL OF APPROVAL IS BECOMING A MARKETPLACE FIXTURE

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Seal announced today that five consumer paper products distributed by Ashdun Industries, Inc., are the first products to receive the organization's certification mark. Ashdun's recycled facial and bathroom tissues meet Green Seal's standards for environmental impacts in manufacturing and packaging. The tissue products contain 100 percent recovered paper fiber and 20 percent post consumer materials and meet Green Seal's standards for bleaching and de-inking.
The distinctive Green Seal "check mark and globe" will now appear on three Ashdun brands: C.A.R.E. bath and facial tissue; Project Green bath tissue; and AWARE bath and facial tissue.
Norman Dean, Green Seal president and chief executive officer, said: "Green Seal has scored a victory for the environment, for business and for consumers. For the first time, consumers, retailers, manufacturers and distributors will be able to see a trustworthy, reliable and effective label that tells them, this product has passed the most rigorous environmental test.'"
The Green Seal Certification Mark is awarded to products that meet rigorous environmental standards set on a category-by-category basis. Green Seal's primary testing laboratory is Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), the nation's most respected name in product testing and certification.
Green Seal has published standards in 35 product categories and is in various stages of formulating standards in 13 additional categories. The published standards include Bath and Facial Tissue, Compact Fluorescent Lamps, Printing and Writing Paper, Re-refined Engine Oil, Water Efficient Fixtures, and Paper Towels and Paper Napkins.
"In the coming weeks, the Green Seal Certification Mark will be awarded to products in each of the categories where standards are now complete," Dean said. "Furthermore, we have completed the public comment period for standards in categories that include household paints, household cleaners, and we will begin reviewing product applications in those areas very soon."
Ashdun Industries, of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., is a national marketer and distributor of consumer products. The three tissue brands are sold on an exclusive basis to retailers across the country. The Green Seal environmental seal of approval will begin appearing on products shipped to retail outlets in March. Ashdun Industries has also applied for certification of additional products.
Green Seal is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environment by promoting the manufacture and sale of environmentally responsible consumer products. It sets environmental standards and allows the use of its certification mark on products found to meet them.
