GREEN LIGHT FOR LUCAS CAR BRAKING SYSTEMS VENTURE
 IN CZECH AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
WEST MIDLANDS, England, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucas Industries plc today announced that the Czech Minister of Privatization has given approval to a joint venture between Lucas and Autobrzdy for the manufacture of car braking systems. The venture will be known as "Lucas Autobrzdy" and Lucas will shortly be taking an initial shareholding.
The Lucas relationship with Autobrzdy stems from a license granted in 1984 for Lucas Colette Disc Brakes which are currently supplied to VAG Groups VW-Skoda for the Favorit. The VW participation in Skoda, and Lucas-established position as a leading brake supplier to VAG Groups' VW-Audi, created a clear strategic motive for Lucas and Autobrzdy to develop their relationship into a joint venture.
VAG Group's own growth plans are to double production capacity over the next four years and it is looking to Autobrzdy to meet its braking system requirements. This will mean expansion for the joint venture which is likely to be partly funded by Lucas subscribing additional capital and increasing its participation.
Ken Maciver, managing director of Lucas Car Braking Systems, said, "We regard this as a very positive and promising first step into the new Eastern Europe where we expect major expansion in the vehicle industry during the 1990s. We are very fortunate in the close relationship we have with Autobrzdy which enabled us to work together to define and plan the joint venture and to secure its approval."
Lucas Industries is a leading international supplier of advanced technology systems, components and services to the world's aerospace, automotive and other selected markets.
Autobrzdy is a former member of PAL, the erstwhile Czechoslovakian state components organization. In addition to its leading position in braking, Autobrzdy also manufactures other automotive components including shock absorbers, heater and electrical parts.
